Here is a suggestion for training
that you need to do if you want to compete in lifesaving. Stay on the blue. If you want to be competitive, you need to swim
alot.
70% of your training, (if not more) should be spent
swimming!
If you want to be a good board
paddler, you need to board paddle (and surf). If you want to be good on the kayak, you need to kayak! If you want to be a
good runner, go run. The point is, there is no substitute for any discipline. If you can do everything mentioned above consistantly,
you will keep getting faster. If you do have time to lift weights, your not working a full-time job!
Weight training can benefit all athletes...ONCE
you have trained and exhausted all of your disciplines. That's enough training for us normal working class people.
Some times, athletes think they need to do some cross
training in the off season. For baseball, football and golf that makes sense. Lifesaving competitors have to master running,
swimming, surfkiing, paddling and in the US, rowing! And then you have to figure out how to do all of these in pumping surf...and
then all at once during an IRONMAN! Good luck with cross-training! Get my point?
